Key Points Question Is practice ownership associated with physician perceptions of the electronic health record (EHR)? Findings In this cross-sectional study of 1368 physicians who responded to the 2019 National Electronic Health Records Survey, EHR satisfaction, perception that time spent on documentation was appropriate, and the presence of staff support for documentation were significantly higher among those working in physician-owned practices compared with non–physician-owned practices. Differences in physician perceptions of the appropriateness of documentation time and the presence of staff support for documentation only partially explained the differences in EHR satisfaction by practice ownership. Meaning The study’s findings suggest that multiple features associated with physician ownership of practices are likely to play a role in greater EHR satisfaction.
