West with an Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award for her contributions over a career that spanned decades, from the first days of the space race. Notably, she had a hand in what is now a ubiquitous tool, the global positioning system. The use of satellite data to accurately assess position presents rich mathematical challenges, in part because of the difficulty in modeling the Earth itself.
