Abstract The degradation of an AlMg6M alloy, which is used as the material of the bottoms of large tanks, during long-term operation is considered. The yield strength of the alloy increases, the plasticity decreases, and the impact toughness decreases in comparison with the same characteristics estimated after the annealing imitating the initial state of the material. The degradation of the mechanical properties is associated with structural changes, which is confirmed by the study of the microrelief of the fracture surfaces of alloy specimens.
