W the ever-increasing complexity of health care, clinicians must work well together to ensure a healthy work environment (HWE). Numerous research studies have validated the importance of an HWE1-3; therefore, effective communication should be taught, supported, and openly encouraged in all clinical environments. However, after reviewing 10 years of sentinel events, members of the Joint Commission found that communication, or lack thereof, was the root cause in almost 70% of unanticipated events.4 Since team communication and collaboration are essential for HWEs and patient safety, nurses and physicians must work together and communicate openly about changes in any patient’s condition. Good communication has been associated with improved patient safety and positive patient outcomes.5 Moreover, novice nurses need to learn how to communicate with experienced nurse mentors to function optimally in their role. Through communication and education, nurses can learn the importance of HWEs and access the tools needed to address and improve an unhealthy work environment.
