Key Points Question Are patients’ values around comfort vs life prolongation associated with their engagement in advance care planning and end-of-life care? Finding Of the 933 patients receiving maintenance dialysis in this survey study, 452 indicated that they would value comfort-focused care rather than longevity-focused care if they were seriously ill. Differences in these health care values did not translate into substantial differences in either engagement in advance care planning or end-of-life care, both of which suggested a focus on life prolongation. Meaning This study found that there appeared to be a disconnect between patients’ expressed values around comfort vs longevity and engagement in advance care planning and end-of-life care.
