Key Points Question Are positive and negative media coverage of transgender health care associated with referrals to child and adolescent gender identity clinics in Sweden? Findings In this cross-sectional study including 1784 referrals, negative media coverage on transgender health care was associated with decreased referrals to gender identity clinics. Referrals decreased by 25.2% over a 3-month period following 1 critical media event. Meaning These findings suggest that media coverage may influence and jeopardize young transgender individuals’ access to transgender-specific health care; therefore, nuanced and accurate media coverage is essential.
