Key Points Question Is there an association between prenatal exposure to opioid analgesics and fifth-grade scholastic skills? Findings In this cohort study of 64 256 children, exposure to opioid analgesics in the first trimester or during two to three 4-week intervals during pregnancy was associated with lower scores in literacy and numeracy tests, compared with only prepregnancy exposure. However, the differences may not be clinically relevant. Meaning The findings of this study suggest that there is no association between prenatal exposure to opioid analgesics and fifth-grade scholastic skills.
