Key Points Question What is the association of an emergency department–based intensive care unit (ED-ICU) with cost of care delivery? Findings In this economic analysis performed at an academic medical center in the US, implementation of an ED-ICU was not associated with a change in inflation-adjusted cost per ED patient encounter. Meaning These findings suggest that implementation of an ED-ICU model can provide higher value care by improving quality (reduced ICU use and 30-day mortality) without increasing cost.
