Key Points Question Are older adults adequately represented in clinical trials for new drug evaluation? Findings In this cross-sectional study, adults in the oldest age groups above age 75 years or in some therapeutic areas above age 80 years in clinical trials were not enrolled in proportion to the prevalence of selected treatment indications in the US from 2010 through 2019. However, participants between ages 60 and 75 years were reasonably proportional with the prevalence of selected treatment indications. Meaning These results suggest that a lack of adequate representation of older adults in clinical trials for new drug evaluation can present challenges for optimal use and prescribing.
