Key Points Question Does the addition of exercise to a family-based lifestyle program reduce abdominal fat depots in children with overweight or obesity? Findings In this secondary analysis of a 22-week nonrandomized controlled trial of 116 participants, the addition of exercise to a lifestyle intervention resulted in clinically meaningful reductions in visceral adipose tissue and other abdominal fat depots in children with overweight or obesity. The reduction in visceral adipose tissue might mediate the improvement of insulin resistance. Meaning These findings suggest that multicomponent therapies including a family-based lifestyle intervention and exercise can result in robust reductions in the size of abdominal fat depots, leading to insulin sensitivity benefits for children with overweight or obesity.
