Key Points Questions Is psychosocial stress associated with an increased risk of acute stroke, and does higher locus of control modify this risk? Findings In this international case-control study of risk factors for first stroke in 26 812 participants, self-reported psychosocial stress was associated with increased risk of all stroke. Higher locus of control at work and home was associated with diminished magnitude of context-specific psychosocial stress and odds of acute stroke. Meaning These findings suggest that higher locus of control may be an effect modifier of the risk for stroke associated with psychosocial stress.
