Key Points Question How do patient spokespersons distinguish surrogate medical decision-making from patient advocacy? Findings This qualitative study of a subset of 36 participants in a randomized clinical trial found substantial variability in how spokespersons for patients with chronic illness conceptualize their role as surrogate decision-makers and/or patient advocates. Meaning Understanding how spokespersons perceive their role is critical for assessing the effectiveness of advance care planning interventions.
