Key Points Question Is treating pregnant individuals with periodontitis with chlorhexidine mouthwash plus scaling and root planing associated with birth outcomes? Findings In this systematic review and meta-analysis including 12 studies with 5735 participants, chlorhexidine mouthwash plus scaling and root planing, but not scaling and root planing alone, was associated with reduced risks of preterm birth and low birth weight. Meaning These findings suggest that using chlorhexidine mouthwash with scaling and root planing to treat periodontitis in pregnant individuals may improve birth outcomes.
