Key Points Question Is the presence of an academic medical center (AMC) within a health care market associated with better outcomes for patients treated at neighboring nonteaching hospitals? Findings In this retrospective cohort study of 22 509 824 hospitalizations among older Medicare beneficiaries at US acute care hospitals from 2015 to 2017, receiving care in a market with high AMC presence was associated with lower mortality and a greater number of healthy days at home among patients treated at non-AMCs. Meaning These findings suggest that AMCs may have spillover effects on outcomes for patients treated at neighboring nonteaching hospitals.
