Key Points Question How many 30-day readmissions following hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia are avoidable? Findings In a cohort study including 1150 index hospital stays with a diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia, multiple physician review analyzed by latent class analysis found only 15 readmissions were avoidable (13.9% of the 108 unplanned readmissions). Meaning The low rate of avoidable readmissions found in this study contradicts the logic of the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program, which is based upon the notion that they should be mostly avoidable.

Keywords: following hospitalization; readmissions following; day readmissions; acquired pneumonia; community acquired
