Key Points Question Are mothers’ and newborns’ exposures to heat and cold associated with newborn lung function? Findings In this cohort study of 343 mother-child pairs, both mothers’ and newborns’ exposures to heat and cold were significantly associated with decreased functional residual capacity and increased respiratory rate in female newborns. In addition, cold was significantly associated with decreased tidal volume in female newborns. Meaning This work suggests an association between ambient temperature and newborns’ respiratory systems and underlines the vulnerability of pregnant women and their future children to climate change.
