Key Points Question Is state-level tax policy associated with infant mortality in the United States? Findings In this cross-sectional study of 148 336 infant deaths from 1996 through 2019, an increase in tax revenue and the Suits index of tax progressivity were both statistically significantly associated with decreased infant mortality. These associations varied by race and ethnicity. Meaning These findings suggest that tax policy, an important and modifiable social determinant of health, may be one approach for decreasing infant mortality.
