Key Points Question What do hospital nurses say helps or hinders their ability to provide quality care to socially disadvantaged patients? Findings This qualitative, directed content analysis of open-text responses from 1084 hospital nurses identified systems, institutional, community, and individual nurse and patient factors that helped or hindered care across 6 themes: profits over patients, care continuity and hospital-community partnerships, insufficient staffing and time constraints, technology to address language barriers, patients’ determinants of health, and individual nurses’ beliefs and backgrounds. Meaning These findings suggest that nurses are informants of the strategies hospitals should use to advance high-quality, equitable care to socially disadvantaged patients.
