Key Points Question Are family socioeconomic factors associated with eating disorder symptoms among adolescents? Findings This cohort study including 7824 participants found adolescents from more deprived backgrounds were at highest risk of eating disorder symptoms, especially those whose parents reported difficulties in affording cost of essential material goods. Children of parents who had only compulsory educations were also at highest risk of developing disordered eating compared with children of parents who were had university educations. Meaning These findings suggest that reducing socioeconomic inequalities could also help prevent eating disorders in the general population.
