In this Scientists' Forum article, we interview Dr Irina Borodina, who leads a laboratory at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, and is a co-founder of the biotech company BioPhero, which produces insect pheromones for environmentally friendly pest control. The use of yeast cell factories as a sustainable approach to produce chemicals, drugs and natural products is discussed.
