Electrical barriers at the grain boundaries of ZnO varistors are altered by mechanical stresses, which, therefore, play an important role regarding the functionality of the material. The stresses lead to the modification of electrical properties such as electrical conductivity and volume efficiency. An electrical 3D network model based on a realistic microstructure is presented. The model considers externally applied stress as well as micro stresses that evolve naturally during fabrication of materials with anisotropic thermal expansion coefficients. The predicted effects (i.e., increasing electrical conductivity and higher volume efficiency) due to compressive stresses are validated experimentally.
