PRIO P BIEFIN G A s it does every year, the observation of Fire Prevention Week, recognized this year on Oct. 7-13, provides an invaluable opportunity to discuss the myriad issues related to fire safety in the OR. One key element of surgical fire prevention and management is efficient and effective training of perioperative personnel. The recently updated AORN “Guideline for a safe environment of care” continues to recommend that all personnel receive education and complete a competency verification that includes the elements of the fire triangle (i.e., fuel, an ignition source, an oxidizer), the roles and responsibilities of personnel in various fire scenarios, and other fire safety protocols.1
