By simulating high-temperature and high-pressure operating conditions of an aviation engine using an autoclave, we studied the physicochemical properties and tribological behaviors of poly-α-olefin base oil samples during thermal oxidation at different temperatures. According to Fourier transform infrared spectrometric and gas chromatography/mass spectrometric analyses, at high temperatures the oil was oxidatively degraded to a large number of low-molecular-mass compounds, which influenced the viscosity, acidity, and antiwear property of the oil. © 2017 Curtin University and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
