• Transradial access was associated with fewer vascular complications than transfemoral access assisted by with vessel plug and suture closure devices. • Confounding variables, such as case complexity and sheath size used, affect the external validity of the results. • Further research is required to establish best access practices. In the meantime, radial artery access appears to be the safer approach when technically feasible.
