Many experimental scientists' careers depend on calculating P values from the statistical analysis of their data, whether in psychology or geology or medicine. A PhD, publication, or grant may depend on a P value, which together with the Impact Factor is one of the most important statistics on which modern scientific careers are based. Even within traditional chemometrics, P values have some role, for example, to determine whether a factor in an experiment has a significant influence on the response or whether a potential marker compound is significant.
