Fine‐needle aspiration is used as a diagnostic tool in head and neck oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and its metastases. Prognosis and treatment rely on the presence or absence of the human papilloma virus. The purpose of this study was to validate the performance of the Aptima HPV assay using Hema‐Diff stained fine‐needle aspiration smears in the diagnosis of human papilloma virus‐related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma using a simplified method to obtain tumor cells for testing.
