Acanthamoeba is a microscopic, free-living ameba that can cause rare, but severe infections of the eye. The Acanthamoeba life cycle includes the protozoan (15–45 mm in diameter) and cyst (10–25 mm diameter) forms. The protozoa are mobile while the cysts are double walled and resistant to environmental stressors or intentional killing by freezing, desiccation, and chlorine in water supplies, swimming pools, and hot tubs. The trophozoite has an amoeboid shape with pseudopodia and feeds on small algae, bacteria, and other protozoans. The main risk factors for Acanthamoeba keratitis includes extended contact lenses use, bathing with contact lens on and cleaning them with tap water. 2 | CASE REPORT
