: The development of ecological benchmark values for major ions in fresh water, measured as total dissolved solids (TDS) or speci fi c conductivity, is a dif fi cult problem with multiple proposed solutions. Brent et al. (2022) presented a new site ‐ speci fi c method based on laboratory tests of synthetic ion mixtures. Their method has appealing attributes, but their critique of the US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) fi eld ‐ based method (USEPA, 2016) demands a response.
