The incidence of syphilis in the United States increased by 15% from 2013 to 2014. One in eight untreated cases of syphilis will progress to late-stage syphilis, which often presents 10-20 years later, allowing decades of opportunity for disease transmission and resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis is therefore crucial. It is estimated that 3% of secondary syphilis cases can present as syphilitic hepatitis, but the condition may remain largely unrecognized.
