The American Telemedicine Association defines telemedicine as the "remote delivery of health care services and clinical information using telecommunications technology". The first paper on telemedicine was published in 1962 but widespread use would have to wait for broad availability of interconnected computers about thirty years later. Even in the 1990s, teleconferencing required two dedicated phone lines and expensive equipment that was not readily available.
