Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is the first insult a transplanted organ endures in its new host. Through a combination of increased oxidative stress and inflammation, IRI may cause severe and sometimes lasting damage to the newly perfused graft. In liver transplantation, IRI may lead to hepatocyte injury and even primary non-function of the allograft with expected inferior outcomes (2).
