The only curative treatment for end-stage liver disease is liver transplantation. However, a shortage of donor organs, financial burden on the patients, and the need for lifelong immunosuppression are major limitations. One potential solution to these issues would be to bioengineer a functioning liver from a patient's own cells in the lab, and transplant the lab-grown organ into the patient. This technology could theoretically provide unlimited grafts without the need for immunosuppression.
