A recent article in the International Journal of Cancer reported the results of a calcium + vitamin D supplementation randomized controlled trial (RCT) regarding cancer incidence and cause-specific mortality in Black women. 1 Half of the 3335 women were randomized to receive 1 g/day calcium plus 400 IU/day vitamin D 3 while the other half were given pla-cebos for an average of 7 years. Total mortality, cause-specific mortality, and total cancer incidence were nearly equal for calcium + vitamin D 3 supplementation and placebo treatment. The authors concluded that vitamin D supplementation was unlikely to reduce health disparities related to these outcomes in Black populations.
