In this paper, we extend the state equations for the stock of unskilled and skilled workers by introducing internal training and study the dynamics of the number of skilled workers at the firm level. A threshold (R0) is defined, which can be used to judge whether skilled workers continue to exist. However, R0 is difficult to explicitly calculate because of its abstract form in infinite‐dimensional spaces. Therefore, a numerical approximation method to calculate R0 is provided. The factors affecting R0 are discussed through numerical examples. Based on the calculation results, we provide some suggestions for hiring/firing and training strategies in firms.
