Peter M. A. Sherwood has been an influential figure in the surface analysis community, including in X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). He was a fellow at Downing College, Cambridge. In 1972, he left Cambridge to establish a dedicated surface‐science laboratory at Newcastle University. Based on his work at Cambridge he later published the book: “Vibrational Spectroscopy of Solids.” In 1985, Sherwood joined the faculty at Kansas State University. While at Kansas State University he served as a Program Officer for the National Science Foundation. In 2004, he moved to Oklahoma State University, where he became the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Sherwood has served on the editorial boards of six journals. Sherwood has been a pioneer in XPS peak fitting and data analysis. Among other things, he notes that, in the early days of XPS, the peak fitting of an XPS spectrum could take a week on a mainframe computer. Sherwood has also pioneered the use of XPS for the analysis of carbon fibers, including after their electrochemical modification.
