In the hot plate rolling process, the ideal symmetric condition cannot be always ensured and the rolled plate may turn up or turn down. The factors associated with the plate curvature are as follows: temperature difference, roll speed mismatch, roll diameter difference, frictional difference, reduction rate, ingoing thickness, and so on. The roll diameter ratio must occur when the reprocessed work rolls are used. So, it is important to determine the range of the admissible roll diameter ratio which causes very narrow range of the plate curvature to ensure a normal rolling. The authors investigate the influence of the roll diameter ratio on the plate curvature during seven passes of a reversing rougher by using the three‐dimension finite element analysis software DEFORM‐3D V.10.2. Based on the simulation results, the range of admissible roll diameter ratio is determined. It is less than 1.09 when the linear velocities of rolls are symmetric. The results can be as basis data for the design of the work roll reprocessing parameters and the real‐time control to ensure a normal rolling in a reversing rougher.
