Congenital heart surgical care has a unique spectrum of patient population ranging from neonatal primary sternotomy to adult re-sternotomy. Surgical goals can range from palliative techniques to corrective techniques depending on disease complexity. The historical complexities in the evolution of surgical techniques add an additional layer of intrigue. Nursing roles within the operating theater are autonomous and diverse and require highly specialized knowledge and skill set. Nursing care must be adaptable and involve high level of critical thinking to ensure patient safety and positive patient outcomes.
