Peripheral neuropathies are a set of complex pain syndromes which cause neuropathic pain due to neuronal injury. Causes of peripheral neuropathy can include diabetes, medications, toxins, genetics, poor nutrition, and infection. Many peripheral neuropathies present with similar qualities of pain, yet underlying pathophysiology uniquely affects presentation and treatment modalities. This chapter focuses primarily on HIV related neuropathy, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy with an additional focus upon several less common etiologies of peripheral neuropathic pain.
