Naloxone is a highly specific, high-affinity opioid antagonist used to reverse the effects of opioids. It is available in several formulations for convenient administration by medical trained personnel and by lay persons in the ambulatory setting. Naltrexone is available orally or by long acting intramuscular injection for alcohol or opioid dependence disorders. With rising opioid misuse, abuse, addiction, and overdose deaths across the nation, increasing access to these products is vital to successfully managing the opioid epidemic.
