In the last decades, researches on speed control of electric motors have been very important in industrial systems. On the other hand, the development of power electronics and semiconductor technologies has expanded the scope of the AC and DC machines. However, the separately excited DC motor is widely used in the field of variable speed applications due to its simplicity to control. In this paper, we present the control of a separately excited DC motor using an analogue PI controller, a backstepping method and an adaptive backstepping control techniques. Simulations are performed in MATLAB Simulink software, and improved results of adaptive backstepping controller have been obtained overall system performance compared to conventional PI and backstepping.
