The fact that the2ndeditionof thisvolumeappeared just6years after the 1st reflects the success obtained by the 1st edition as well as the enormous progress in the field of haematopathology during this spanof time, also thanks to the extensive application ofmolecular techniques including next-generation sequencing (NGS). All the new pieces of information comprised in the present volume are pivotal not only for the diagnosis but also for accurate prognostic prevision and the usage of tailored therapies. In otherwords, the volume fits verywellwith the present concept of precision medicine. Importantly, the timing of the 2nd edition ofHematopathology has been coordinatedwith the release of the revisedWHOClassification [1, 2], representing a useful complement for the pathologist trying to face the main changes in the classification of lymphomas, leukaemias and accessory cell disorders aswell aswith this continuouslyevolving field. The 2nd edition of Hematopathology further strengthens the principles introduced by the Revised EuropeanAmerican Lymphoma (REAL) Classification in 1994 [3]. Each entity is based on the amalgamation of clinical data, morphologic findings, phenotypic profile, molecular characteristics, and the identification of the normal counterpart of the process. These principles were adopted in the 3rd and 4th editions of the WHO Classification [4, 5] and extended to myeloid neoplasms and will represent the cornerstone of the incoming revision of the WHO Classification [1, 2]. As underl ined by the Editors of the 2nd edi t ion of Hematopathology, these concepts imply that pathologists, haematologists and oncologists work as a team, since nowadays, nobody can remain closed-off in his ivory tower, ignoring either clinical information or the way a diagnosis is produced and should be translated into daily practice. The patient is the main beneficiary of this interdisciplinary approach. Besides defining and discussing the main entities in the setting of lymphoid and myeloid neoplasms, the 2nd edition of Hematopathology offers the reader some other important pieces of information. First, it includes technical guidelines. In this respect, the pre-analytical phase is the most critical step of every kind of biopsy, as is the usage of adequate techniques. The volume highlights, for instance, the main genetic alterations encountered in each entity, which can be detected by NGS and represent the rationale for the usage of targeted therapies. Secondly, it discusses conditions that enter in the differential diagnosis with lymphomas and leukaemias. Thirdly, it gives the reader access to a huge amount of references on the Expert Consult web-site, with the benefit of electronic access to the PubMed links instantaneously. Fourthly, the images are all high quality and very illustrative of the different conditions, thus representing a fundamental aid in the daily work. Finally, yet importantly, the authors of the different chapters are well-known authorities in their field. The 2nd edition of Hematopathology represents a unique reference, which should be present in the library of all haematopathologists, haematologists and oncologists, providing pivotal information to be applied in their daily practice resulting in great benefits to patients and their families.
