The theory of electrochemical nucleation and growth was intensively developed in the last century based mainly on concepts originating from gas phase crystallization. Nevertheless, keen electrochemical experiments revealed different aspects of the initial stages of phase formation, e.g., the mechanisms of growth of dislocation-free crystal surfaces and several aspects of the nucleation and growth kinetics in the heterogeneous case [1, 2]. Do we need to revisit the classical concepts and are we aware of their limitations?
