Yellowing and slight stunting were found on ginseng (Panax ginseng) plants in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, in August 2017. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) isolated from the diseased leaves reproduced the symptoms after back-inoculation to ginseng plants, and CMV was detected from the inoculated symptomatic leaves. Isolated CMV was classified into subgroup IA based on the coat protein and 5′ NTR nucleotide sequencing analyses. This is the first report of CMV as a pathogen of ginseng in Japan.
