Herein, a novel microwave absorber, based on a hybrid material of mesporous carbon, FeCoNi alloy and coated with polyaniline/polypyrrole conductive copolymer, was prepared. The mesoporous carbon imparts lightweightness to the absorber, whereas FeCoNi and the copolymer render the magnetic and dielectric loss properties of the absorber, respectively. The absorber has been characterized with X-ray diffractometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The constitutive parameters of the samples were estimated using a vector network analyzer. The results indicate that the coating with the conductive copolymer enhances the matching impedance and decreases the matching thickness of the absorber. The minimum reflection loss is obtained around − 16 dB at the matching frequency of 14.2 GHz, and the bandwidth under − 10 dB is about 2.7 GHz for a loading percentage of 35wt% and a matching thickness of 2.5 mm.
