An in situ detector for radiological assessments of strontium-90 (90Sr) in river and lake water is developed, based on a CaF2(Eu) scintillator, silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), and photomultiplier tube (PMT). A radioactivity-contaminated environment was simulated using 90Sr added to raw water. The detection efficiency of the prototype detectors was 1319 Bq L−1 for a measurement time of 10 min and 330 Bq L−1 for the SiPM and PMT detectors. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the detectors for radioactivity measurement in underwater environment. The developed system will be embedded on buoys in rivers and lakes to be used as a fixed-type monitor.
