A chemical equilibrium experiment was conducted to remove rare earth (RE) elements from a U/RE ingot using UCl3 as an oxidant. Upon analysis, the RE and uranium in the prepared U/RE ingot formed discrete matrixes and were not well mixed. The reaction with UCl3 resulted in the complete removal of the RE matrix from the U/RE specimen, and an increased concentration of RE chloride and a drastically reduced concentration of UCl3 in the LiCl–KCl molten salt. The results of this study will be used to improve the process for transuranic waste treatment in pyroprocessing.
