The hot corrosion behavior of a Ce-modified NiAl coating by a 75 wt% Na2SO4 + 25 wt% NaCl deposit at 1050 °C was investigated. Results demonstrated that the coating tended to fail after 50 h of hot corrosion and experienced an extremely short dormant period which involves almost no mass change, only 20 h (from 20 to 40 h of hot corrosion). Meanwhile, the coating showed a relatively low mass gain in the first 20 h of hot corrosion due to the significant consumption of Al and the severe spallation of Al2O3 scale, which means that the coating does not have good corrosion resistance to Cl-containing Na2SO4 during this stage. It is clearly demonstrated that the existence of Cl− ion accelerates the alkaline dissolution of the Al2O3 scale and Cl2 further aggravates a significant consumption of the protective element Al, which leads to the accelerated failure of the coating.Graphical Abstract
