The process of ethanol condensation to 1-butanol in the presence of MgO-Al 2 O 3 systems modified with lanthanum and cerium oxide additives was studied. It is shown that MgO-Al 2 O 3 doping with lanthanum and cerium oxides leads to an increase in the total concentration of acid and basic sites on the surface of the catalysts. It was found that increasing the concentration of basic sites for La- and Ce-containing samples promotes an increase in the yield of acetaldehyde but does not lead to an increase in the yield of 1-butanol due to a decrease in the number of aldol condensation sites. Increasing the concentration ratio of basic and acid sites of the surface helps to increase the productivity of the catalyst for 1-butanol.
