Wedge liver biopsies (2-cm fragments from segments III or IV) were extracted during proceedings. The same Pathology team performed all histopathological analyses. NAFLD-related abnormalities were classified according to the Brazilian Society of Hepatology criteria: (I) steatosis (absent, mild, moderate, or severe); (II) fibrosis (according to the Kleiner-Brunt classification: 0, absent; 1, isolated perisinusoidal or periportal; 2, periportal and perisinusoidal; 3, presence of fibrous septa; 4, cirrhosis); and (III) steatohepatitis (classification in degrees: 0, 1+, 2+, 3+). Grades 3 and 4 fibroses were considered “advanced fibrosis” [1, 2].
