In this study, stresses in a D-ring seal under compression and various hydraulic pressures were analyzed using Photoelastic experimental hybrid method (PEHM). The fracture behaviors of the seal, namely the shape, location and origin of damage, were investigated. It was shown that fracture damage initiated from the region close to extrusion gap and propagated inward at an angle of about 60˚ with the horizontal as the reference and also along the circumference of the seal. The maximum contact length reached about 84 % of the cross sectional height. The attractive features of the seal makes it a suitable choice for high pressure sealing applications.
